The myth
Hecate Ἑκάτη
kleidouchos, “the key-holder”
Only daughter of Asteria and Perses, and so the lead’s own child. Hesiod says Zeus honoured her above all others and gave her a share of earth, sea and starry heaven. Later hymns call her kleidouchos, “the key-holder”. She is the torch-bearing guardian of gates, thresholds and crossroads, the one who decides who passes.
Security is the work of holding the keys and watching the gates. That makes her the right guardian for the island her mother became.
